What are polyphenols, where do we find them and what are their benefits?
Polyphenols are plant compounds that give many fruits and vegetables their bright colors and protect them from external factors, such as ultraviolet and microbial infections, thus enhancing their natural defense.
In the human body, they can help prevent clots, reduce blood sugar levels and reduce risk of heart disease. They can also promote brain function, improve digestion and provide some protection against cancer, although more research is required to have specific recommendations.
Although tea, cocoa, dark chocolate, red wine and berries are probably the most famous sources of polyphenols, many other foods also contain large amounts of these beneficial compounds such as legumes, nuts, whole grain products and spices.
Including a variety of these foods in our diet is a great strategy to increase the intake of these beneficial nutrients and benefit from them.
